There was a genius amongst their midst, at least that was the latest buzz around town. Someone had moved into the brick houses in one of the districts and erected a sign outside claming the owner to be a ‘All-around Genius’. That’s what the rumors were anyway. There was even talk of the place being dubbed the “Lab of the Genius”. When something possessed a name like that, created by someone calling themselves a “All-around Genius”, it begged to go under scrutiny of a few raised eyebrows and scratches on the head.

Vesta and Blink had been out and about the city scouting for those who were in need of services from the Fires of Hades. Store names these days, was it any wonder why people were wary or just a little bit crazy? She had seen some pretty strange stores since she arrived in Rhy’din (the Nit-Picker of Diggory-dun came to mind), and the names continued to amaze her. A person could either choose to go to Hell or go see a Genius - who might be one of the sorts who knows everything about everything and never lets anyone get a word in edgewise about anything.

That wasn’t the point.

The point was that Vesta was doing both, and so was Blink as he stood on Vesta’s shoulder, the pair of them standing on the sidewalk outside of the brick ranch house. Just for reference point, it should be noted that today was an overcast and cloudy type of day. Blink told her that it was going to rain and had put up one helluva blinking and tapping protest when she told him that they were going to go see a scientist. He even called her crazy, but Vesta wasn’t the one to bank in on all those movies about Dr. Frankenstein where mad experiments happened on rainy days, roof of the store opening up and the whole, “Igor, pull the switch!” type of deal. That’s why she was here. Although the clouds up above did seem a bit dark. . .

“Yes, Blink, we are going in.” Vesta said with calm reserve as she conquered the three steps up to the front door. “Just you watch, nothing catastrophic is going to happen just because I ring the bell.” She hoped. Stranger things have happened, but there was a note by the door telling people to ring the bell. Couldn’t be all that bad, could it? Of course it could!

This guy could have a highly ingenious sense of humor. . .

Nothing catastrophic. Not at all. Just an EXPLOSION! That's right. Right when Vesta rang that bell she'd hear an explosion coming from inside. Wasn't chance happenstance a wonderful thing? Bet it put her squirrel right at ease, too.

But seriously. It was an explosion, sure. But it didn't raise the roof or blow out windows or anything. A contained explosion. A planned explosion, even. So precautions had been taken. Not the first one to happen inside Archer's lab today. It was actually the third. No, forth. That second one was an accident, so thank god they'd taken precautions right? But no one lost an eyebrow, so they were all winners.

On his way to the door, Archer yelled over his shoulder. "I mean it! You fire that off with no witnesses it doesn't count. No second chances in this game!" Mostly because Archer wanted to win. He could be one competitive genius. Especially when he was going head to head with his brilliant brother. Nothing like beating the most brilliant man in the universe to swell your ego, right? Like Archer needed his ego swelled any more than it already was, but hey. Men'll be boys, boys and their toys. And he and the Doctor were definitely at the toys today.

As he was pulling the door open he realized he forgot to add, "And no going back in time! Or forward!" That should cover it. Door opening the rest of the way there the genius stood. In a three piece suit. Vest, no tie. Mid-thirties, salt and pepper hair [more salt than pepper these days] with a soul patch as the only bit of facial hair. That look was his usual. Just because he spent most of his time in a lab, didn't mean he had to look like a shlub?

"Well hey there!" Said to the woman standing there that he totally had never seen before. Why did he know he hadn't seen her before? Because standing before Vesta was a man with a photographic memory. Part of why he was a genius. Never forgot a single thing. Much to his chagrin, when it came to some things. "What can I do for you?"

Grey eyes had a gander at the squirrel. Little brow lift. "Or your squirrel there." Little known fact, Archer could talk to animals. Converse with them, nice and easy. He didn't mention that fact now to Vesta. Or to the squirrel. Because let's face it, some animals got really long winded when they knew you understood them perfectly clear.

Was there anything better than a cloudy day? Many things were better, of course, but not if you happened to be a certain half vampire stalker. That's right, while Vesta and the non-talking squirrel named Blink were roaming about the town they were being followed.

Just who would be following a colorful girl and her squirrel? Aiden of course! Neither hide nor hair had been seen of the guy since the big Valentine's Ball, but now there he was, staying a few feet behind his prey.

What a picture this had to be for anyone who happened to pass the trio by. Vesta in her colorful clothing with the squirrel being followed by a guy who looked like he escaped a desert island somewhere wearing a billowing black cloak and deep tinted glasses.

It was when Vesta stopped outside the brick house, and went up the steps, that he finally caught up with her. Deciding he'd been sneaking around enough for the day he slid up beside her. "Mary-Anne! Fancy runnin' into you here! What are ya up to today? Not trying to break into anymore vampire hideouts, are ya?" A glance was given to the building and it's sign then, just to be on the safe side. Seeing the sign, his gaze turned back towards her, looking over the tops of those glasses even. "A genius? Trying to locate the real Professor?"

What the hell? See! She was right, there was an explosion and pretty soon the sky was going to get darker, lighting was going to crackle and she would hear the loud and unhinged laughter that only a mad scientist – or genius – could make.

It made Blink start bouncing around on her shoulder in that way he had when he was in hysterics and it didn’t help any when Vesta took a step back only to bump into someone. She was unprepared for it and therefore the bump caught her off guard and she lost her balance for a half a second as she turned around and saw that it was “Gilligan!”

What luck! It was luck, right? Not like he was stalking her or anything like that. Who in their right mind would stalk her? Blink was getting use to the Vampire popping in and out of nowhere so the guy was being greeted with a few fluttered blinks and a swish-sway of tail.

“I always wanted to met a Genius,” Vesta replied in response to Aiden’s question about what she was doing. “Back home folks would say that someone would have to be a genius to know what I was about.” There nice way of saying that she was a bit off and not all that put together at times.

Due to the shock of the mini explosion inside the house, and bumping backwards into Aiden, she missed the muffled set of words that came through the door. Then Blink started bouncing on her shoulder, the door was opening and he wanted to make sure she knew it.

And she did, words like “And no going back in time! Or forward!” were not your common everyday phrases and so, when she heard that phrase, she looked back at that door. What did her wondering eyes see but a handsome who didn’t look as if he’d been in an explosion at all. Then again, he could have had one heck of a wardrobe change.

The guy seemed chipper and she broke into a brilliant smile. “Well hey there to you too!” Nice guy. He even addressed Blink who was currently half-hidden behind Vesta’s neck as he examined the pepper-haired man. If Archer was able to talk to Blink then he’d decipher that Blink was saying that there were strange smells coming from that open door. Smells that were possibly undetectable by the average human.

“I don’t think Blink here needs anything. He may be hungry but he’s always hungry. So!” Perpare yourselves, it was time for a round introduction. Vesta tossed her thumb behind her to point at Aiden. “This is Gilligan and I’m Vesta.” Using that same hand to pat herself on the chest in the old introductory way of cavemen.

“And I need a Genius.”

Weren't planned explosions grand? It was the unplanned ones where you lost eyebrows and who knows what else. And even then, Archer always had an idea of when something MIGHT explode. No use in ruining a good suit if you know something might blow, right? At least while Archer was at the door nothing else should explode? Not unless the Doctor wanted his second shot disqualified.

As for the squirrel, oh he heard him alright. But Archer'd long ago mastered the casual, 'Who me? Hear animals? Pshaw' kind of look and stance. See there he went, nonchalant lean in the doorway after the squirrel mentioned weird smells. The squirrel was right. He and the Doctor were in his containment vault - they'd propped the door open of course so they didn't get shut in there - working on a small competition. That involved using the release of gas pressure to shoot bullets from specialized guns they'd eat made. First competition was to see who's gas gun fired better. Nothing like shooting a load of gas, right? And sadly, not all gases carried no scent.

"Well you got one! Well, two, sort of. A genius - Archer Caughey that's me," he jerked his thumb in the direction of the sign which hung just above the bell, "and then the smartest man in the universe, he happens to be here too. Note that smartest man in the universe doesn't necessarily mean genius," he added in a lower parenthetical tone. And then, back to his usual volume of voice. "So! Seems we have a two for one special in the lab today, your lucky day."

Archer closed the curtain on his casual lean, so he could step back from the door and gesture them inside. As he did he added, "Vesta, Gilligan, Blink, real nice to meet you three. So, Gilligan. You in need of a genius too, or are you more on Blink's side of the board and just thinking about grub? Have a seat, go ahead." Archer gestured to the sitting room. Plenty of room and places to sit. And hey, let's not forget about the room's best feature which was every room's best feature - a bottle of Scotch.

As the guests were coming in, Archer turned his head to yell down the hall. "Hey, Alien!" He loved calling the Doctor that. Archer's new thing lately when he wanted to jab at him. "We got some people here who are in need of a slice of genius!"

From the back room there came the sound of rushing air, and then through the wall came flying a ball bearing which then did a very elaborate game of harmless ricochet before landing in one of Archers many empty scotch Glasses.

"ha! made that shot didn't I? and don't you try to deny it!" the Englishman voice cam ringing before the Doctor came jaunting out after the voice. The doctor was tall and a bit lanky, wearing a wonderfully tailored brown suit with sky blue pinstripes running down its length, the rest of the emsemble completely going with eh rest of the suit brilliantly, even his specticles looked good with the suit.

"Oh, I know, why do you think I randomly showed up today? I knew someone in need of real intelligence... hi there, I'm The Doctor... I'm absolutely brilliant, and as my wonderful brothere here so often likes to point out, I am an Alien to this land, Well, an Alien to most lands, well... you know! arent we all really aliens to this land, of course unless you where born here naturally... so! my dear Brother, you are also and Alien. but! I certain that you didn't come here in order to listen to two genius' bicker about semantics... how may we help you two?"

There is no such thing as a second chance to make a first impression. Well, okay, maybe in a world like this where the not so everyday happened everyday. If she ended up spending a lot of time in this world (moreso than she has already) she may just try walking on walls. Maybe 'ailens' to this place developed abilityes from eating the food...

Speaking of aliens, something was starting to make sense. When the swanky Scotsman had playfully threatened someone about not going back or forward in time, Vesta had thought it to be a joke. A bit of playful banter since the guy seemed of the humorous sort. Now, that the other guy had entered into the room, she'd see that it wasn't banter at all.

"I shouldn't be surprised, I really shouldn't." Vesta smacked the side of her face with the left hand and covered her left eye. It was one of those 'I don't believe it' gestures and, coupled together with the trickled chortle, she was a picture of masked disbelief. "The Doctor? As in Doctor Who who travels in the old style phone booth and uses a qwerky screwdriver?"

She use to watch that show on tv back home and so she knew who he was - in theory anyway.

"Well now," making the declaration to the others in the room. "This is an interesting turns of events. I'm sure both of you can figure out the thing I came here to figure out." Blink was in agreement with her for he blinked and nodded and said that these two guys could do a lot of damage when left alone together. There had been that explosion and the gas.

"You see, I work in a forge with a Dracon and things can get a bit hot and heavy in there. I got this breating thing, or something, with the smoke and chemicals? I can't wear a mask - total fashion crisis - and it's as hot as Hell in there and I can only take off so much and still work so!"

She clapped her hands together as she looked between Archer and The Doctor. "What can you do for me?"

Well, that was interesting. . . The sound of an explosion coming from the building gathered little reaction from Aiden save for one eyebrow lifting and his dark gaze studying the door with more intensity. It did prove one point though - it was a good thing he was following Vesta around. She could have been in there when who-knows-what exploded, and then who would he of had to stalk? Yeah, sure, there were plenty of other people the vampire could stalk, but none was as entertaining as her!

So call it purely dumb luck that he found her here, but when she backed up there he was, grinning widely. "A genius, huh? Sounds entertaining, I could use an afternoon pick-me-up!" Yep, he was inviting himself along for the ride.

Even to someone who had been born and raised in Rhy'Din -like Aiden, the word genius brought with it the image of an maniacal looking man with frazzled hair wearing a once-white, but now stained lab coat. Which explained why when the door opened to reveal the man in the three-piece suit Aiden gawked. Not the whole mouth open like he was catching flies, looking like an idiot gawk, but he was definitely staring.

Lucky for the guy the shock on Aiden wore off fast. When Vesta introduced him he nodded towards the man. "Sup? I'm just here for the show." Was there going to be a show? Aiden's experience around Vesta had proven that while one was not expected, a show of some sort was usually forthcoming.

Now Aiden usually wasn't a quiet type of guy, ask anyone who spent more than ten minutes in his company, but the genius coupled with talk of aliens and the added appearance of the so-called alien, well it was enough to shut even him up.

Silence was golden, especially since it allowed him the opportunity to listen to the reason Vesta was looking for a genius in the first place. Though her mention of only being able to take so many clothes off sent his mind wandering. . .

The swanky Irishman [drank scotch was Irish, unless are what you drink in which case Archer needs to switch up his alchy diet to Irish Whiskey] let the Doctor's retort to being called an alien go, but he sure as hell couldn't let the elaborate gun fire go unjabbed at. "You mean the shot that came flying at us screaming, 'lookout a huge showoff's about to crash the party'? You made that one dead bang, brother. We were totally warned. I even moved over, so your swelled head could have enough room in here with the rest of us." Archer flashed the Doctor a big grin. He even reached up and gave him a nice noogie.

As for if the Doctor was the Doctor, he was totally going to let the Doctor handle that. The fact that Samantha wouldn't let him pitch all those damn Doctor Who DVDs was enough thinking on that issue that he needed. Besides, the Doc had to be used to that question by now, right? In the meantime, Archer turned to Gilligan. "Just here for the show, huh? You picked a good one. Haven't gotten a bad review yet. Glass of scotch?" Archer gave a nod in the direction of the half empty bottle, and the two empty glasses. Well, mostly empty. The one had the Doctor's ricocheted ball bearing in it.

While he waited for Aiden's answer he gave Vesta's problem a listen. After giving the back of his neck a scratch, the genius slipped his hands in his pockets. By the time Vesta was done talking, he was doing a slow pace back and forth. What he usually did when he was thinking Helped the gears turn. Finally he stopped, turning to face her.

"Couple questions, if ya don't mind. Are we talking about just solving the breathing thing, or are we solving the heat thing too? Because the heat thing, that's easy. I can give you something to treat whatever fabric you want so you don't have a fashion crisis while trying to stay cool. Or, wear clothes made of a heat friendly fabric. If you cast an eye at the realm I'm from, and take a look at what people are wearing in the Middle East, India, that's the kind of fabric you should be looking into." Check that off the list, that was just a matter of helping her find the right things or cooking something up. Easy, that one.

Maybe so easy she'd solved that problem already on her own. Maybe she was just here for what really peaked his interest. The breathing thing, when she didn't want to wear a mask. That could be a challenge. He liked challenges. "So, this breathing thing. I get the cause - smoke and chemicals - but tell me about the effect. Is the problem you're getting sick or lightheaded? That the stuff's toxic? Or is it burning your throat? Leaving a bad taste in the mouth? Something else?"

He glanced at the Doctor, to see if there were any questions his brother wanted to add. Archer already had a potential solution to pitch, half of one anyway, that involved developing a specialized chewing gum. But depending on Vesta's answer, the genius might have to go back to the drawing board. Which was cool with him. After all, he liked challenges.

"Yes well, big head like that comes from being really the most brilliant mind in the universe.... thank you though, for the consideration enough to move over to let me in." The doctor tended to hyper focus on things when he spoke, but was able to completely segway thoughts easily enough so that even though he wasnt looking at vesta when she was speaking to him, he was able to make his next rapid fire sentence right at her.

"yeah, thats me, The Doctor... good show too, works for keeping my actions off the radar. someone says they saw a man running about in a phone box. thenpeople wouldnt think any more of it. hm, you know! funny story, he's never actually been called Doctor Who in the show... though I've been a few times, but!" a pause and a great big smile." I digress, you! need some help solving a problem..." taken a moment in order let Archer get his thoughts out. and then a nod."We can try and get you a andorian air filtration device... sort of like nose plugs, , but they only work for the nose... hm, could always go for a designer breathing apparatus i hear gucci has one out...."

That last bit was clearly a joke, which was followed by a small little chuckle before he made a serious face." but! in all serious-ness, if its really bothering you that much, I'd say to ignore the fashion faux paus and get a standard gas mask. and wear it, I mean you are working in a forge... you said? how much of a fashion statement would you really need to make at the work place?"

"...How much of a fashion statement would you really need to make at the work place?"

That had been the question from the Doctor, and Vesta had a right old answer to give him too. "A big one?" That might not have been a good answer, but it was an avoidance answer, one that wasn't exactly relevant but let something be said. She didn't know about other people, and it wasn't as if she was one of those females who were always dressed to the tens with the perfect makeup and manicured nails. Still. The thought of wearing a gas mask -or any type of mask that covered her mouth and nose - freaked her out.

While she maintained a calm outward appearance and the look of 'I can't believe he wants me to destroy my fashion sense' she could feel her pulse rate quickening. Defiantly something Aiden would probably pick up on. Maybe she would have a shot of Scotch as it may help to calm her nerves.

There was at least one creature who would picked up on her sudden bit of panic - concealed or otherwise - and that was Blink. He started blinking his eyes and swishing his tail back and forth as a way of telling her to calm down and not be nervous. Animals picked up on things like that. Nerves. Fear. Anxiety.

Would the squirrel want a drink? Maybe it would get nervous with her, though that seemed unlikely.

At least Archer had stopped pacing. It always made ideas pop into her head when she saw people pacing when they were in thought. Ideas like whether or not they would see a pencil that would -from out of nowhere - start rolling towards them before they tripped. Nothing to worry about here though! The thought was just a thought and the last time she checked, her thoughts were not popping out of her head without giving proper warning.

"Dreconis, that's the boss man, gave me this red stone to keep from getting burnt. That's great and all ‘cause I won't get burned but I still feel the heat. I'm not a Dracon like he is." That guy had scales; the heat of his own flame didn't bother him. "Nor am I like the other chick who's there. I don't think he minds much at all if I come to work dressed like I'm going to the beach but the average human body can only breathe in so much heat before the air starts to burn the lungs."

Sure, she knew it was going to be hot when she volunteered to learn, but perhaps she thought normal person hot. Jokes on her!

"So it does burn I guess, causes me to feel all sorts of dehydrated and withered on the inside." Vesta was busy looking back and forth from one genious to the other.

Check this out folks! A genuine, pure-breed, bon-ifide human. No racial bonuses here.

"Just here for the show, huh? You picked a good one. Haven't gotten a bad review yet. Glass of scotch?"

Poof. There went any elaborate fantasies that had been cooking in Aiden's twisted moment of distraction. Tipping his head down he greeted Archer with a piercing over-the-top of his glasses look. A look that clearly read 'I was enjoying that'. Finally he shrugged, flipping the glasses back in place. "Scotch, huh? I'll try a glass." It was a shock, but unlike every other seemingly Rhy'Dian Aiden was not a big drinker.

If he was going to drink might as well drag Vesta along with him! That brought up a new entertaining thought: what would she be like after a few drinks. The thought churning happily in his mind, he had turned back to her with a wide grin only to have it fall off his face. The sound of her pulse quickening was definitely picked up, the thumping making his throat tighten. There was no need to alert the media, however, he had learned from the shoe-in-fang incident. Before the hunger could surge he looked away, though his attention remained focused on her.

"Are you okay?"

From one person with no racial bonuses to another, Archer got her problem. The only bonus he had was his brain, and it was bona fide human like the rest of him. Well that, and the understanding animals thing. Some would talk it a mutation, others would call it the right rare combination. Genetics, fascinating stuff. He'd been up to his eyeballs in it ever since he and Samantha got close, and once you were around it you really did see how it was everywhere and in everything. Anyway. Back to the handy topic.

He scoffed at the Doctor's suggestion. "Standard gas mask? Where's the challenge in that, is it time for your nap old man?" Yeah, implying that the Doctor was feeling too much like an old man today to bother hitting with the heavy thinkers. "I mean between what you're thinking and what I'm thinking I'd say were almost all the way there and we haven't even broken a sweat. Speaking of sweat, your andorian air filter, can it temper heat too?" If it could, there was one breathing passage taken care of right there.

He was trying not to pay attention to the squirrel. Out of the corner of his eye he saw it getting twitchy. If it started speaking...tune it out, Archer. It was Vesta's squirrel, she could take care of him fine. No need to get involved. Instead he scratched the back of his neck with a pensive look, dead grey eyes focused on her. "This stone. That helps you not get burnt. If you tell me what he used, I can work with it. Work it and some other things I'm thinking about at into a chewing gum. Your saliva will draw the properties of the stone out and coat your throat and its partner pipes well enough to keep you from feeling the discomfort and getting burnt, and I'll add the bonus of it absorbing the particles of all the crap you'll be breathing in when you're working there. You just won't be able to swallow it. The gum, I mean. And you'll have to put in a new piece every...well, that depends. Have to develop it and run the tests. Don't want to quote you something inaccurate."

He dropped his hand from the back of his neck, and slid both into his pockets. "That the kinda thing you're looking for, Vesta? Between the Doctor's alien nose tickler and my gum, we've already got both points of entry covered. Unless you're an alien too, one that breathes through your ears or something." Big grin. That was a joke as much as it was a little jab at the Doctor. You know, for being an alien and all.

And Aiden, he got a gesture from Archer. About the scotch, a 'help yourself' kind of gesture, which was given to Vesta as well. Archer was lucky his liver had cleaned out during that year he was away. He was proof that coming back from the land of the dead made your drinking problem go from hobby to occupation.

The doctor scrunched his face a bit, looking up at the sky in thought. and then he gave a nod." yeah i think it could well...You could add a few ... well... yes" and then a firm nod , and then a second." yeah, yes you should be able to do that.

And then like he'd been struck with a bolt of lightning the good Doctor Threw a hand in the air."Thats it! alright my good brother, you can go in the back and work out your inferior launching system. We use a pair of modified Cardionan gills. they work like reverse gills for the Cardionan sea creatures filters their air, compensates for most impurities, including temperature differentialities. Problem with that is... that it would flood her lungs with water... but! now we have a proper plan... unless Archer disagrees with me?"

A charming beaming bright smile from the doctor then. apparently basking in his own brilliance.

Gills?

They - or really just one of them - wanted to give her gills. Now, she had seen this in a movie once: this guy took a swallow of some herb and then he grew gills on his neck and his feet and hands becamed webbed. He could then breathe under water with the best of the Merfolk. That is what came to mind when the Doctor mentioned gills.

Yeah. . . If she had been home, in mundane Chicago, she would think that the two of them were pulling her leg. However! She was not home, she was here and therefore this wasn't strange. Right? Evenso, the whole idea made her quiver. That drink was calling her name.

"Right, okay," nod of her head as she headed to the bar. "I say we go with the gum idea." Blink was agreeing with her as he moved his squirrely tail on her shoulders. "Im a bit nervous about gills...."

The first thing he noticed? No one was helping themselves to the scotch. What was up with that! Maybe he had to be more of a host, or maybe they were the type that'd jump after if someone else jumped first. Either way, Archer decided he'd head over in the direction of the bottle and get at least his own ball rolling.

Opening the top drawer of the cabinet the scotch sat on, he pulled out two extra glasses and he sat them next to the two already there. Two of them he filled with about two shot's worth of scotch, the other he filled a lot higher than that. The last glass he left empty, since it had the ball bearing in it and he didn't think it would be too hostly of him to pick the ball out and fill the glass without washing it. Besides, it was only on rare occasions that he got the Doctor good and liquored up anyway. The glass that was filled nice and high he picked up as he turned around to face the group with a big grin.

"Hear that, brother? She wants to go with the gum idea." He resisted the urge to add 'because I rule' on the end and just let that bit be implied. He rocked on his heels and took a nice long drink which he punctuated with an "Ahhh. Nice, nice. Well. From the way the plan's shaping out Vesta it won't be either-or, more of a combo plate of both ideas, but don't you worry. We'll take good care of you, right Doc?" And if they didn't, come on. If there was anyone who could pull of a pair of fashion gills it should be Vesta right? She could be a regular fish out of water. Hardy har har.

A second drought of bliss and he put it on the counter so he could clap and rub his hands together. Time for action. "So. Game plan. Vesta, in the next couple of days you get me that stone, whether you drop it by here or tell me the name of it or send it in the mail or messenger or whatever you want. In the meantime, the Doc and I will put our heads together, come up with some Plan As and Bs, do some experimenting, and I'd say so long as you get that stone to us soon if you come back in a week we'll have something for you to test out."

One more glance at the Doctor. "Sound good to you?" Wasn't Archer nice? The Doctor was here, so the genius was making him a real part of the plan. Maybe deep, deep down Archer knew that this might be a better project to have some brother bonding with instead of their gas powered shooters.
