The word "curfew" comes from the french word couvre feu, or "cover the fire".
A curfew was originally the time when you had to extinguish fires, candles, and
lamps.

The Puritans brought beer to America. According to Mourt's Relation (1622),
the Mayflower Pilgrims settled at Plymouth because supplies, especially beer,
were running low. Beer was a dietary mainstay on long voyages, because,
having been boiled, it was purer than water.

i've been meaning to share this useless info for a while! when i was in high school i borrowed a book my creative writing teacher had about schizophrenics and how their illness impacted their art. late 19th - early 20th century artist Louis Wain was one of many featured in the book. he's been a source of debate and fascination because his subjects were almost exclusively cats, and many psychologists say the 'deterioration' in his artistic style in his later years is the result of the worsening of his mental illness, for which he eventually had to be institutionalized. for example...

one from the early years....
useless info of the day! Wain3

two from the later years....
useless info of the day! Louis-wain2

the book and the subject always stuck with me, and the paintings of his later years are always in my mind when i think of pris and her art-making, though i think she has more of a globular curved line dali style. =D

Light slows when shown through a diamond. There have been many experiments done with timers that prove when you shine a beam of light through a diamond, there is an appreciable slowing down-timwise-for the beam to come out the other side.

Somehow the beam gets caught up in the structure and takes longer to escape the
diamond. Some scientists believe that there may even be images trapped in the
diamond that may one day be recovered to show an event from the past.

Brylcreem (pronounced brill-cream) is a men's hair grooming product created in
1928. Brylcreem's purpose is to keep combed hair in place while giving it a shine
or gloss. It is an emulsion of water and mineral oil stabilised with beeswax.

The shiny "wet" look it gave hair was de rigueur for men for many years.

Brylcreem's use declined during the 1960s as hair fashions changed to favor the
"dry look". However, it has seen a comeback since the late 1990s.

A coal-mine fire in Haas Canyon, Colorado, was ignited by spontaneous
combustion in 1916 and withstood all efforts to put it out. The 900 to 1700
degree fire was eventually quenched by heat-resistant foam mixed with
grout in 2000.

In 1994, there were more than 420,000 accidents caused by kitchen knives,
122,000 by drinking glasses, 29,000 by refrigerators, and 7,000 by dishwashers.

The big toes have two bones each while the rest have three.

Fingernails are made from the same substance as a bird's beak.

Fidgeting can burn about 350 calories a day.

Dogs and humans are the only animals with prostates.

The attachment of human muscles to skin is what causes dimples.
